Waipoua Forest: "Tane Mahuta" (named for the Maori God of the Forest). The largest living tree in NZ, 51 m high, 13.8 m in circumference, about 1500 yrs. old. One of the few big remaining Kauri trees. Agathis australis: has a very deep fossil history in NZ with ancestors extending well back into the Mesozoic. It has been seen as truly a Gondwanan element of the NZ flora. The Kauri is part of the Araucariacea family: a Coniferous tree.
Because the trunks grow straight up without branches and not getting thinner, it means that they contain huge amount of nice straight timber with few knots. Maori's used them for canoes. Pakeha's (white people) for anything and everything.
