Near Blenheim:
I came across this Black Stilt (Kaki in Maori) in the wild in company
of a Pied Stilt with hybridises with the Black Stilts. Correspondence with
Department of Conservation:
Dear Hein,
Thank you very much for your picture - a very good shot!
Our kaki team knew that a bird with the right leg bands red-orange migrated
to the Blenheim Area. Therefore we are quite sure that the bird you've seen
is a female that was hatched in November 2001, and was released as a juvenile
in January 2002 at Mt Gerald, on the Godley River. She has not been seen
since March 2005! So it is good to know that she is alive (although she
probably is mated with a pied stilt now?!).
Thank you again for this information; it has proved to be very useful to
us.
Cheers, Ursula
Cheers, Ursula
